FIVE KILLED IN HEAD-ON COLLISION


KUCHING: Five persons, including a policeman, were killed while five others were injured in a head-on collision between a Naza Citra and a police Land Rover at Layar in Betong district yesterday. The dead have been identified as Ngalampong Ranggau, 30, and his brother Chaong, 39, both of Nanas Road here, Robert Unya, 33, Omar Ilu, 67, and Lance Corporal Lee Kui San, 57. The injured, meanwhile, were Omar’s children Amit and Saidi, two relatives identified as Peter Men and Matahir Mahmud, and 25-year-old police constable Chenangko David Daud.The fatal crash occurred around 2.15am about 25 km from Betong town when the Land Rover driven by Lee crashed with the Citra carrying Ngalampong, Chaong and Robert. At that time, the police vehicle was on its way to Betong Hospital to transport the body of Omar’s grandson, Zainul Zuhri, 20, who was killed in a motorcycle accident at Jalan Debak Laut a few hours earlier. Betong district police chief DSP Mohamad Bukhori confirmed the incident and said the crash was being investigated under Section 41(2) of the Penal Code for reckless driving resulting in death. According to him, Lee and Chenangko had responded to a fatal accident involving Zainul, who had lost control of his bike and crashed into a lamp post, around 11.20pm. Zainul’s relatives later accompanied his body to the mortuary and were seated in the rear of the Land Rover when the collision happened. The five who died were killed on the spot, while the injured were all thrown out of the Land Rover onto the road. Betong fire station personnel rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 2.29am and assisted in extricating the dead victims’ bodies from the wreckage. The injured were sent to Betong Hospital where Chenangko received outpatient treatment while the four others were referred to the Sarawak General Hospital.
